Day 1
Upon arrival, meet your tour manager and transfer south to your hotel in Parghelia, close to Tropea and overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. Settle in to your surroundings, enjoy dinner at your hotel and perhaps watch your first Calabrian sunset.
Day 2
Today you're free to make the most of your hotel and nearby Tropea. Why not enjoy pleasures of the pool, take the shuttle bus to the nearby private beach, or into Tropea to explore its streets and dramatic cliff-top setting? Fringed at its foot by golden sands and blue waters, Tropea is a perfect place in which to rest and relax. It boasts a delightful old town of narrow streets, a glorious Norman cathedral and a café-lined main thoroughfare, the Corso Vittorio Emmanuale, which leads down to a viewpoint overlooking the azure sea. A rocky outcrop crowned by the beautiful Santa Maria dell’Isola church and monastery rises from the town's main beach, and dedicated sunworshippers enjoy their earthly pleasures on the idyllic sands to either side. Why not head to colourful Piazza Ercole in the early evening to take part in the traditional passeggiata as the locals stroll and chat their way through the streets?
Day 3
The first of our included tours is a perfect introduction to Calabria. It begins with a journey south along the Costa degli Dei (the Coast of the Gods), to ancient Scilla, set beneath imposing Castello Ruffo on its rocky promontory dividing two sandy beaches. The steets of the colourful town lead down to the exquisite fishing village of Chianalea di Scilla, a tumbledown delight where ancient houses cluster round the waters beside which fishermen tend their nets before setting out in search of swordfish, the most popular regional dish. After a chance to explore we'll head further south, to Reggio di Calabria, the regional capital. The town - once one of the first Ancient Greek colonies in Italy – is most famous for its location across the Straits of Messina from Sicily. On a clear day, the summit of Mount Etna can be seen from the seafront. Don’t miss the elegant shops and stores of Corso Garibaldi before we return to Tropea for dinner at the end of a fascinating day.
Day 4
Rest and relax in the hotel and its surroundings, or rise early to enjoy a memorable cruise to the volcanic Aeolian Isles. You'll set sail from Tropea's port and cross to Vulcano, docking in Porto di Levante beneath the island's brooding cone. While you're here why not enjoy a therapeutic volcanic mud bath (payable locally) or a swim before we continue to the largest Aeolian island, Lípari? Delightful Lípari Town hugs the bay beneath a 1000-year-old castle. Wander its colourful streets, head to a remoter island corner for another dip, or simply enjoy lunch or an ice cream in the sun. Passing island idyll Panarea, we'll head next to fabled Strómboli, and go ashore in Port Scari. If you're lucky you'll see Mount Strómboli fire a plume of incandescent cinder and ash into the air - always a dramatic sight, and a perfectly safe experience from the water when sea and wind conditions permit – before you return to Tropea at the end of a marvellous day.
Day 5
Today’s excursion takes you across Calabria to the Ionian Sea coast. Here Gerace's ancient streets and imposing cathedral, in their fortified hill-top setting, offer stunning views of the coast beyond, and the vast remains at Locri Epizefiri afford a glimpse of life some 2700 years ago. Enjoy a walking tour of Gerace, and visit the fascinating Locri museum to discover its archaeological treasures, during another wonderful day.
Day 6
Spend another delightful day at your hotel, on the beach or perhaps in Tropea, making the most of your sun-kissed surroundings.
Day 7
Your final half-day guided tour heads inland to the northern Calabrian city of Cosenza. Built on seven hills at the confluence of the Busento and Crati rivers, Cosenza is surrounded by mountains including the green slopes of Sila National Park. A fascinating place, where ancient and modern sit side by side (the city is markedly more prosperous than many of its regional counterparts) Cosenza radiates Southern Italian charm and the city’s grand piazzas and labyrinthine old town are delightful places to wander.
Day 8
Bid "Arrivederci" to your Calabrian hosts, and transfer back to Lamezia Airport to catch your flight home at the end of a holiday in Italy’s fascinating southern corner.
Santa Lucia Hotel, Tropea
This traditional, southern Italian four-star hotel is beautifully set above the Tyrrhenian Sea, just two miles north of Tropea.

Travelling to Europe
Rules may have changed since you last travelled to European Union countries and Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. The following are useful guidelines which will help you prepare for your next adventure. Note that these new rules do NOT apply when travelling within the United Kingdom or to the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man or the Republic of Ireland. You do require government issued ID when travelling by air though. Names - It is very important that all passenger names are exactly as per your passport although we do not require middle names. Passport - Your passport must meet two requirements to travel to an EU country and to Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. It must be less than 10 years old on the day you return home – please check the 'date of issue' and valid for at least 3 months after the day you return home – please check the 'expiry date'. These rules do not apply to travel to Ireland where you can continue to use your passport as long as it’s valid for the length of your stay. Visa - If you’re a tourist, you do not need a visa for short trips to most EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. You’ll be able to stay for up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period. Different rules will apply to Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus and Romania; if you visit these countries, visits to other EU countries will not count towards the 90-day total. Travel to Ireland will not change and stays there will not count towards the 90-day total. European Travel Information & Authorisation System (ETIAS) - Towards the end of 2022, it is likely that non EU citizens will be required to apply online for an authorisation to visit most European countries. The current details suggest there will be a charge of €7 per person and the authorisation will be valid for all trips made to the EU in a three year period from issue. We will advise you of confirmed details prior to your tour’s departure. Border Control - At border control, you may need to show proof of your return journey - your travel documentation issued by us will be sufficient for this. You will also need to use separate lanes from EU, EEA and Swiss citizens if manual checks are required. Healthcare Cover - You should always get appropriate travel insurance with healthcare cover before you go abroad which covers pre-existing conditions. You should understand the terms and conditions of your travel insurance and be happy with its cover for healthcare and travel disruption. Newmarket sell a comprehensive travel insurance policy. Ask our travel consultants for more information. You should also apply for a UK Global Heath Insurance Card (GHIC) which lets you get urgent state healthcare in Europe at a reduced cost or sometimes for free. Note GHIC is only valid in EU countries and not in Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.
